Bagged vs Bulk Mulch: Which Is Cheaper?
Bulk is cheaper per yard, but delivery fees mean bags usually win below about 2–10 cubic yards, depending on your local prices.
The Break-Even Formula
Bulk mulch costs less per yard, but you pay a delivery fee once per order. Bags have no delivery fee but cost more per yard, so there’s a quantity where the two cost the same:
Break-even yards = delivery fee ÷ (bag price per yard − bulk price per yard)
To get the bag price per yard, multiply the price of one bag by the bags in a yard: 13.5 for 2 cu ft bags, 9 for 3 cu ft bags.
Three Examples
All three use 2 cu ft bags:
| Bag price | Bags per yard cost | Bulk price | Delivery | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $3.00 | $40.50 | $30 a yard | $100 | 9.5 yards |
| $4.00 | $54.00 | $40 a yard | $75 | 5.4 yards |
| $6.00 | $81.00 | $50 a yard | $75 | 2.4 yards |
Below the break-even, bags are cheaper; above it, bulk is. Cheap bags on sale push the break-even up, which is why big-box spring mulch sales often beat bulk for typical beds. Expensive bags and free or cheap delivery push it down.
If bags cost less per yard than bulk, as they sometimes do during sales, bulk never pays off.
What the Price Doesn’t Show
| Bags | Bulk | |
|---|---|---|
| Lifting | Every bag, at least twice | Shovel from one pile |
| Waste | Plastic bags to throw away | None |
| Storage | Stack anywhere, keeps for weeks | A pile on your driveway to spread soon |
| Small jobs | Buy exactly what you need | Minimum orders, often 1 yard or more |
| Odd spots | Easy to carry to the back yard | Wheelbarrow trips |
Run Your Numbers
Prices vary a lot by region. HomeGuide puts bags at $2–$8, bulk at $25–$100 a yard, and delivery at $50–$150. The mulch calculator does the comparison with your beds and your prices, and the same comparison is built into the topsoil and gravel calculators.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bulk Mulch Better Quality Than Bagged?
Not necessarily, because both range from cheap dyed wood to premium hardwood and bark. Ask what’s in the bulk pile and look at it before you order, as you would read a bag.Can I Pick Up Bulk Mulch Myself?
Many landscape yards will load a truck or trailer for you, which avoids the delivery fee. Check your vehicle’s payload rating first.Sources
