What a Paver Patio Costs

HomeGuide’s cost data puts a professionally installed paver patio at $8–$17 per square foot, depending mostly on the paver:

PaverInstalled cost per sq ft
Concrete$8–$15
Natural stone$8–$14
Brick$10–$17

That price breaks down into roughly:

  • Pavers: about $2–$4 a sq ft for standard concrete pavers.
  • Base, sand, and edging: about $1.40–$2.20 a sq ft for crushed rock base, bedding sand, geotextile, edging, and joint sand.
  • Labor: about $6–$11 a sq ft.

Worked example. A 12 × 10 ft patio (120 sq ft) of 12 × 12 in concrete pavers at the calculator’s default prices:

Cost
132 pavers (120 sq ft + 10% extra) at $3 a sq ft$396
Base, sand, and edging: 120 sq ft at $1.80$216
DIY materials$612
Installation labor, 120 sq ft at $8.50$1,020
Professionally installed$1,632 ($13.60 a sq ft)

DIY or Hire a Pro?

Doing it yourself cuts the price roughly in half, but the work is heavy. For the 120 sq ft example you’d dig out about 5–6 in of soil, move about 2.5 tons of base gravel, and compact it in layers with a rented plate compactor. Cutting pavers needs a wet saw or a block splitter.

The base is where DIY patios fail. If you’re doing it yourself, don’t skimp on base depth or compaction, and run the base at least 6 in past the edges. The paver calculator works out the gravel, sand, and edging for you.

Ways to Save

  • Pick a standard concrete paver. Large-format and natural stone pavers cost more and are harder to cut and level.
  • Keep the shape simple. Rectangles with straight edges mean fewer cuts and less waste.
  • Get the base delivered in bulk. Base gravel in bags costs several times more per ton.
  • Do the demolition and dig-out yourself and hire a pro for the base and paving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does a Paver Patio Cost per Square Foot?

HomeGuide puts professionally installed paver patios at about $8–$17 a sq ft. Concrete pavers run $8–$15, natural stone $8–$14, and brick $10–$17.

How Much Can I Save Doing It Myself?

DIY usually costs $5–$10 a sq ft for materials, about half the installed price. Budget for renting a plate compactor and a saw on top.

What Does Labor Cost for a Paver Patio?

Installation labor is typically $6–$11 a sq ft. Most of that goes to digging out, building and compacting the base, which is also the part that decides whether the patio lasts.

What Makes a Paver Patio Cost More?

Costs rise with premium pavers, complicated patterns, curves, a sloped site that needs grading, poor access for equipment, and steps or seat walls. Removing an old patio or concrete slab adds demolition and haul-away.
